Rotterdam, The Netherlands
Many people flock to Amsterdam for a weekend getaway, unaware of the other Dutch gem making a name for itself across the way for completely different reasons. Rotterdam was more-or-less flattened by bombs during WWII, but the city has since risen to become one of Europe’s most vibrant cities. Flanking the Nieuwe Maas shipping channel, the busy port city sparkles with futuristic architecture, forward-thinking local initiatives (such as inner-city canal surfing!) and a diverse, multiethnic community. Indeed if you’re looking for trendy, you needn’t look further than here. The best bit? Alive with restaurants, bars and eateries bursting with gastronomic delights, it’s a haven for foodies – the food hub at Fenix Food Factory in the Fenixloods is not to be missed.
