Smoothies recipes can be a great way to get your fill of nutrients and can make for a great on-the-go breakfast , snack or light lunch. Fancy whizzing up a healthy treat but not sure where to start? Check out some of our fave smoothie recipes from Nicola Graimes’ book Super Fresh Juices and Smoothies.
Breakfast in a glass
A tasty combo of complex carbs, protein, fibre and essential fatty acids, this is the perfect breakfast smoothie. Pears with their sweet, almost creamy texture are surprisingly low in calories, which makes them great value when you’re craving something sweet, but keeping an eye on calories. Mmmm, what are you waiting for? Let’s get whizzing!
Serves 2
2 small bananas, peeled and frozen
2 ripe pears, peeled, cored and chopped
200ml coconut drinking milk
1tbsp protein powder
Seeds from 4 cardamom pods, ground
1tsp ground flaxseeds
Put the bananas, pears, coconut drinking milk, protein powder, cardamom seeds and half the flaxseeds in a blender and blend until smooth.
Serve sprinkled with the remaining flaxseeds.
Avocado smoopie
A cross between a smoothie and a soup, this make a nutritious snack or light lunch.
Serves 2
1 medium avocado, stoned, peeled and chopped
½ cucumber, deseeded and sliced
2 spring onions, chopped
2tbsp chopped coriander
1 green chilli, deseeded and sliced
250ml coconut water
Splash of Tabasco sauce
Juice of 1 lime
5 ice cubes
1-2tsp spirulina
Put the avocado, cucumber, spring onions, coriander, green chilli, coconut water, Tabasco, lime juice, ice cubes and spirulina in a blender and blend until smooth and creamy. It’s a delicious, rejuvenating combination of creamy avocado, fresh coriander, delicate cucumber with just a hint of chilli. Yum!
