Bored of the gym and want to try something new? Sports are a great way to get fit – why not stay active with volleyball?
There’s something going on with volleyball all year round: the beach season is from April until October, and the indoor season is from September until May, so you can always get a fix. If you’re thinking about starting up, make sure you check out GB volleyball star Zara Dampney’s tips and facts about the sport:
It gets you fit
Ever tried running on a beach? It’s pretty hard – the uneven surface seriously gives your core a workout, and you’re having to work extra hard just to stay stable. ‘Being on the sand gets you a lot fitter, and the diving, jumping and hitting are great for a full-body workout as well as upper body strength,’ adds Zara.
Zara has undertaken a six week swim fitness challenge with Speedo to improve her volleyball fitness. All her fitness results have improved and she has lost over 2kg in weight.
Anyone can do it
Staying active doesn’t have to be a chore. Volleyball is great not only because team sports are sociable, but according to Zara, you can start at any level. ‘It’s a really inclusive sport and great fun – plus, you’re getting a serious workout without even realising!’
