Show your support and celebrate Pride in London with Pride Boxing!
This year, Pride Boxing will be taking place in the UK for the very first time to show support for Pride in London and the UK’s LGBT+ community. The event has been organised by Xclusivetouch, Cobra Gym and Pride in London. Amateur boxers from the LGBT+ community will be encouraged to take their place in the ring to raise money for Pride in London. This is a fantastic way not only to raise money for a worthy cause, but also to break down stigmas in sport associated with the LGBT+ community.
The Pride Boxing amateur boxers will be fully equipped for their showdown in the ring thanks to a gruelling 10-week training programme guaranteed to get them fighting fit. This event may be all about spreading love and positivity, but there’s no doubt that the boxers will be fighting to win.
Training for the big event has already begun, starting on Tuesday 18 April at Cobra Gym in Victoria. Each boxer taking part in Pride Boxing will receive coaching from Jon Durrant, a renowned boxing trainer who’s trained amateur boxers for big sporting events such as The Big Fight UK. The participants may have begun their training process as amateurs, but they’ll be finishing it as champions. All the blood, sweat and tears will culminate in the grand final, which will be taking place at Porchester Hall on Friday 7th July as part of the Pride in London Festival.
Polly Shute, Director of Development & Strategic Partnerships for Pride in London, spoke about the impact that bringing the LGBT+ and boxing communities together could have in the long run:
‘This unique partnership will allow LGBT+ community in London to engage in boxing in a way that not only raises money to support Pride in London but will challenge perceptions.
‘The aim is to truly represent the LGBT+ community, with as much of a gender balance as possible.’
Prejudice exists both against the LGBT+ community and the boxing community, so bringing the two together will be a great step in changing perceptions. Robbie Cave, Co-Director of Xclusivetouch and Promoter for Pride Boxing is proud to be working with the LGBT+ community on this exciting event:
‘Having promoted boxing events in the past, we’re excited to be working with Pride in London this time round to support the LGBT+ community, which has previously had little awareness in this sport.
‘The training program is a challenge but such a rewarding experience for the competitors and there’s nothing quite like fight night; the energy in the room and the support for fighters is always what makes it for us!’
