Yes, you heard right! A recycled coffee hair range has hit the shelves and we love it. Its eco-credentials are impressive and the glossy mane we’re left with has us hooked.
Who would’ve imagined using shampoo made of recycled coffee and even better, being able to plant the bottle and watch it sprout into a tree? It’s the ultimate cradle-to-cradle concept! It’s a pretty genius invention, from the world’s first carbon neutral cosmetics brand, O’right. Each of its enviro-friendly products are carefully made using 16 cups of recycled coffee grounds gathered from coffee shops in Taiwan.
It’s not just a super green, earth-saver either; it actually works wonders on hair, too. Coffee oil provides a great source of antioxidants that have the power to effectively replenish the hair and scalp, protect the skin and hair from heat damage and slow down aging. The caffeine formula is also thought to stimulate the hair follicles, encouraging hair to grow faster and protecting it from the effects of the damaging chemical, DHT.
We really love our cappuccinos, lattes and mochas. So much so that coffee is in fact the world’s most popular beverage, we drink a mammoth 400 billion cups of coffee each year. That equates to 22 million kilograms of coffee grounds being produced on a daily basis. Founder of O’right, Steven Ko tells us more about the concept: ‘We want to turn waste into gold as coffee grounds are a valuable yet overlooked resource, which should not be treated just as waste. We take back coffee grounds from coffee chains in Taiwan, extract the precious coffee oil and it becomes a new ingredient for our products.
The tree in a bottle is made possible through the use of biodegradable packaging – the first time it’s been used to contain shampoo. Steven says: ‘You can bury The RECOFFEE Tree in the Bottle in your garden directly after you use it up. It will biodegrade there and become nutrients for the seeds in the bottom of the bottle. We say this kind of packaging belongs to the biological metabolism – the packaging goes back to nature. All other packaging belongs to the technical metabolism – meaning the products have to go into the municipal recycling system.
Coffee grounds are also added to the packaging to give the bottle its natural coffee colour and wonderful coffee smell without including any harsh chemical colourants. All of O’right’s range is free from parabens, sulphates, environmental hormones and phthalates. Who could say no to glossy, healthy hair made the right way.
