This month, the Virgin Active Discovery Lab team is revealing the brand new fitness class that has taken LA gyms by storm, Barre. Combining elements of traditional ballet with Pilates, yoga and modern dance, Barre is set to be the newest class craze.

Say what?

The top-to-toe workout was developed by Tracey Mallet, the LA-based creator of the bootybarre workout.

Tracey explains: ‘My goal has always been to break down the pre-conceptions of traditional ballet and offer something energetic and fresh that still helps achieve the toned, strong body that ballerinas are so well-known for. I have created a programme that all Virgin Active members, regardless of their ballet or Pilates experience, will find challenging, rewarding, and most of all – fun!’

The class lasts for one hour and it set to chart-topping, upbeat hits to keep motivation and energy high. It starts with a conditioning warm up, based on ballet, yoga and Pilates, then goes into arm strength training, incorporating light weights and high repetition movements. This is followed by 30 minutes of work at the barre, designed to build strength in the core, hips and upper body. It’s great for toning thighs and bums too.

You can also choose to push yourself further by using a Pilates ball while at the barre for an extra challenge. The last section of the class is inspired more by Pilates, with exercises based both on and off the barre to really work your core. The class ends with relaxing stretches, with elements borrowed from yoga to stretch tired muscles and unwind after all your hard work.

The verdict?

If you’re looking to work on building muscle strength and flexibility, then this class is definitely for you. It’s also a great workout if you want to reawaken your love of dance, or if you’ve never had any dance training but have always wanted to try it out.

Using the barre is a great way to work out for so many reasons. It can aid balance and co-ordination, build strength and increase tone, as well as improving rhythm. It can also be really beneficial to anyone with back weaknesses or problems, as it’s great for strengthening back and core muscles. If you want to give a dance class a go but aren’t sure where to begin, this is a great way of introducing yourself to lots of different disciplines so you can get a feel for what it is you enjoy.
