WHL The world’s best cycle cities

Utrecht, Netherlands

Utrecht, like most other Dutch cities, is an incredibly safe and popular place to enjoy riding your bike. Cycling is the most popular mode of transport, with 33 per cent of journeys within the city made by bike. People cycle in Utrecht as part of their daily routine, rather than as a hobby or a form of exercise. It’s embedded in their culture, just like taking the Tube to work in London. The authorities in Utrecht are currently in the process of building the world’s largest bicycle parking station near the Central Railway Station, as a result of the clutter of thousands of bicycles constantly being parked haphazardly around town. It has been estimated that the bicycle parking station will be ready for public use in 2018.
