It may well not be the warm weather we’ve been hoping for, but don’t let that put you off getting outside this season. From catching some rays in the great outdoors to finally taking that leap by jumping on the workout wagon, here are 5 reasons why you should start exercising this summer.

Longer days and nights

Make the most of the longer days and nights by getting outside and catching some rays. The summer is a great time to work out because you have more hours of sunshine. This makes it easier for your body to adjust if you like exercising in the morning. You no longer feel like you’re getting up in the middle of the night if it’s already light outside. And when the evening comes, you’re naturally more inclined to want to get outside. So go on, take advantage of those extra hours of daylight and get fitter this summer.

Mid-year resolution

So what if you only managed it to day three of your New Year’s resolution? Why not use the summer as a change to kick start your resolutions? After all, the weather is slightly better and there are more days of sunlight – so you’re more likely to be motivated to want to exercise. And this doesn’t necessarily mean going to the gym every day. You could always take it outside and join up with a few friends for a game from your childhood, such as rounders. Make a goal during the summer and you may well find it’ll be easier to stick to.

Your body will thank you for it

Despite the heat and exertion that comes with exercising in the summer, your body will reap the health benefits, especially if you take it outside. Firstly, you’ll help to boost your quota of bone-building vitamin D when the sun shines – something those in northern European countries are said to lack. Secondly, you may find your body feels suppler as your muscles are already warm. This doesn’t mean you can skip the post-workout stretch, but you may feel looser and less tight when you begin your workout.

It’ll boost your holiday confidence

Not everyone is lucky enough to jet away to far-flung places on their summer holiday, but chances are you’ll want to take a break at some point over the next few months. Ensure you look your best by starting your workout routine now. This might help shift a few pounds if needed but also, and more importantly, make you feel powerful when you’re strutting your stuff in your swimsuit. Seriously, it’s not how slim your look or how Instagram-able your thighs are; looking good on holiday comes from within. And one way to make yourself feel great is by finding an exercise routine you love and sticking to it.

You can find your own #fitsquad

No matter how motivated you are, it can be difficult in the winter to convince others to workout with you. And for some people, this can be a real chink in the armour, and the deciding factor as to whether they exercise at all. Come the summer, it seems people’s attitudes change for the better and you’ll find it easier to talk someone into joining you on a bike ride or tennis match. You may also be able to enjoy different types of exercise, as more opportunities arise when the sun shines. From beach volleyball to circus skills, if you’re looking for a team to motivate you or to try something new, look to the months of summer and enjoy everything on offer.
