For a challenge: Kennet and Avon Canal, Wiltshire and Berkshire

At 21 miles long, this is section of a three-part route goes from Newbury through the Berkshire countryside to Reading. This bike ride is Britain’s most popular long-distance waterside cycle route. It’s easily reached from London and ends close to Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey!). Featuring classical-style bridges, aqueducts, tunnels and buildings, you will pass through the North Wessex Downs and the southern tip of the Cotswolds – both Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Take a break:

There is a picnic area and tearoom at Thatcham’s Nature Discovery Centre for a mid-point break. Once you finally reach Reading there are plenty of watering holes to choose from! With a range of restaurants outside The Oracle Shopping Centre, you won’t be short of replenishment.

Sightsee:

  • Highclere Castle in Newbury is the home of the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon and is where Downton Abbey is filmed – a must-see!
