For taking the family: Cuckoo Trail, East Sussex

Labelled as one of Britain’s best rail trails, the Cuckoo Trail flies through deciduous woodland and fields on its way from Heathfield to Eastbourne Park, passing through Horam, Hailsham and Polegate. Fourteen miles long, this trail is a very family-friendly, traffic-free ride with plenty of stopping opportunities. It’s great for nature lovers, too – enjoy the wild flowers and good views of the surrounding countryside. Listen out for the green woodpecker and a host of other birds. You might even see butterflies, bullfinches, cuckoos and weasels.

Take a break:

There are benches and picnic tables along the way, but if you want to stop off for some lunch then there are plenty of nice cafes in Hailsham. Try Diplocks Café or the Homely Maid for a cup of tea and a snack. After the cycle you’ll finish in Eastbourne, where you can eat at The Sovereign Harbour (a family-friendly venue) or The Dolphin for a more elaborate meal.

Sightsee:

  • Heathfield Tunnel, an impressive 240m tunnel with Victorian brick arches.
  • Look out for the six sculptures that act as milestones along the way!
