For a leisurely ride: Oxford city centre

Oxford is one of the few true ‘cycling cities’ in the UK. Biking is a wonderful way to experience the cobblestoned city because cars are scarce (thanks to the one-way systems). The roads are flat and the pace is leisurely, so there is no need to be concerned about cycling ability. Bike lanes and commuter routes will help you navigate (the Tourist Information Centre stocks cycle maps) and there are plenty of opportunities for bike hire. Start at Oxford railway station and continue onto George Street, Broad Street and Parks Road to take in the sights. There are also longer river routes along the Thames if you want a more challenging ride.

Take a break:

Stop for a salad or sandwich at Olives Delicatessen Restaurant – the lunchtime favourite boasting “the best sandwiches in Oxford”. For an end-point stop-off, try The Turf Tavern: a 13th century pub hidden down an alleyway (St Helen’s Passage) in the centre. Great for British pub fare and a glass of cider.

Sightsee:

  • Hertford Bridge, popularly known asthe Bridge of Sighs, is a skyway joining two parts of Hertford College. Its distinctive design makes it a great city landmark.
  • Christ Church College, where the Dining Hall was used as a location inHarry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The surrounding Meadows are also beautiful; follow the Isis River (popular for punting) and view the boat houses.
