Whether you’re a newbie or a hardcore spinner, you’ll identify with these 10 things only spin goers know. Because while fitness fads may come and go, this is one class that brings people back again and again – and the secret formula is the pumping music, a crazy-motivational instructor, disco lights… and this emotional rollercoaster.

1. When you step into class that first session, the sight of all those bikes and Lycra-clad classmates, who look suspiciously like pro-cyclists, is enough to make your knees tremble before you even get onto the bike. Why does everyone look so professional?

2. Chances are, you won’t be able to adjust the bike by yourself. So you stand there staring at it or feebly pulling the seat until someone takes pity on you. Someone will help eventually, right?

3. Once you’ve finally got your bike to optimum height, getting on the thing is a challenge in itself. Don’t worry, it’s nearly impossible to look graceful while doing this. As for strapping your feet into the pedals, forget it. (A top tip is to remember to unstrap your feet from the pedals before you try to dismount.)

4. At the start of the session you feel like a champion. At the start. This isn’t so hard. Why do people make such a fuss about a little spin class? Just wait until you’re 20 minutes in.

5. The instructor keeps looking at you. Am I peddling wrong? What’s wrong with me?!

6. You’ll be constantly comparing yourself with the person next to you, who happens to be cycling like an Olympian going for gold.

7. By the time it comes to getting off the bike (thank god), you’re 98 per cent sure you’ve lost the use of your legs. Are they supposed to feel like this? I’ll never walk again.

8. Once you’ve been bitten by the spin bug, you’ll find yourself getting overly excited about themed spin classes. Who needs a night out when there’s a Madonna vs Lady Gaga themed class, complete with glow sticks.

9. You’ll be walking like John Wayne for the next few days. The pain is very real.

10. By the time next week rolls around you’ll be raring to get back on the bike and get your next fix of spin!
