Avoid the lure of the sofa and try our top tips for winter running, to make it easier and more enjoyable.

Go for that run, you’ll feel better for it!

With the temperature dropping, the nights closing in and a very real fear of icy streets, it can be hard to haul yourself off the sofa and head out and run in the winter. So to give you (and us) a little motivation, we’ve come up with five great tips to help you keep moving through the colder months.

1. Get social

Whether you grab some friends for a weekend run (followed by brunch!), or join a running club, nothing beats training with other people. It’s fun, sociable and there’s no way you can skip a session when you know your friends are counting on you to be there!

2. Mix things up on the treadmill

When the weather turns and it’s just too slippery out, the treadmill is your best friend. Mix things up and get your heart pumping with a challenging interval session that pushes you to your limit. You will sweat so much you might forget it’s cold outside!

3. Layer up

Don’t forget a fleecy headband to keep your ears warm when the wind bites! The changing seasons are a great excuse to invest in some new running kit – summer gear just isn’t going to cut it when the temperature drops! Stay warm by layering up cosy base layers from Sweaty Betty and Lululemon, and keep out the elements with a jacket that will get you noticed on the darkest of nights!

4. Have a goal

You are much more likely to train through the winter if you have a goal to focus on. Whether it’s a fun winter 10k, or a spring marathon, decide what you want to achieve and find a training plan to guide you on your way. Just think how amazing you’ll feel crossing that finish line!

5. Soak the cold away

Reward yourself for a run well done with a soothing soak in the bath with a warming cup of Apres hot recovery drink. If that doesn’t get you running home fast, nothing will!
