Getting fit, shifting weight and feeling good are all reasons to sign up to a race. From a short and sweet 5k to an Olympic-distance triathlon, here’s 5 races to sign up to

1.The Color Run
Known as ‘the happiest 5k on the planet,’ this is the perfect opportunity to dress up in your boldest, brightest get-up to shimmy your way to the finish line.
Nationwide (June-September 2014), http://www.thecolorrun.co.uk

2. Wiggle Etape Cymru
Get on your bike for this closed-road 88-miler. The annual ride boasts a grueling climb that’ll leave you with jelly legs, but the reward is massive.

3. Marazion Triathlon
Swim, bike and run this standard distance as part of the Festival of Sport weekend. The open waters of Cornwall will be kinder to you at this time of year than other parts of the UK, too.

4. Winter Warmer Edinburgh
Take on the winter chill with a 5 or 10k in Edinburgh’s Hollyrood Park, with scenery stunning enough to distract you from any obstacles. Choose your distance to do your bit for the British Heart Foundation.

5. Rempstone Roast Mountain Bike Duathlon
Enjoy the festive period and say goodbye to 2014 with a 2-mile run, 10-mile mountain bike ride and 2-mile run.
