There are so many ways to work out: putting a pair of earphones in and zoning out, pairing up with a buddy for a little kick up the backside, joining a massive class of like-minded people for the community feel and way more. Good thing, too, since we all like to exercise in different ways.
If you’re used to working out by yourself and feel like it might be time for a change, why not try taking some classes instead? Here are our 4 reasons to do group exercise.
1. It’s fun
A lot of things are more enjoyable when you’re doing it with other people. ‘Not only do the attendees of exercise classes get more motivation from the instructor, but they bounce off each other, too,’ Dave Kyle, head trainer for group exercise aficionados Les Mills UK, says. ‘Some might be your friends and others will just be there enjoying the ride, but you really can’t bottle that energy – it’s fantastic.’
2. It can push you further
While some people are just fine getting themselves out of bed early in the morning to hit the gym, others need a little extra encouragement, especially if a long day of work and errands lies ahead of you. ‘Many people who attend a class will show up exhausted from the ups and downs of everyday life, but once they join the group, they have their mojo back and become re-energised,’ adds Dave.
3. There’s a structure to follow
If you’re following your own schedule, it’s easy to delay, rearrange or simply put off your gym session. ‘You’re more likely to turn up if there’s a set day and time for your session,’ Dave reckons.
4. It’s sociable
For some people, the gym is a sociable place to be and if that sounds like you, then you’ll benefit hugely from being part of a community-driven exercise class. ‘As humans we love to laugh, joke and have fun, and this is one of the greatest qualities of a group workout setting,’ says Dave. ‘Attending a group exercise class will help you develop a sense of group camaraderie.’
