Find out why we love The Mind Changers, the website dedicated to looking after mental health
No matter what you’re doing, whether you’re at work, at the gym, catching up with friends over a coffee or simply chilling at home watching Netflix, your mental health will affect everything that you do in one way or another. Strain from your job can carry over into your personal life, an argument with a friend could impact on your daily productivity… the list goes on. Everything that you do in your life is connected to your mental health, which is why taking care of it is so incredibly important.
A lot of us choose to suffer in silence when dealing with an inner struggle. According to the Health and Safety Executive, an estimated 19 million people in the UK suffer from stress related health problems [SUBS – can we get a link for this study?]. This whopping figure just goes to show how many of us are affected by stress on a daily basis. Much more needs to be done in order to bring an end to the stigma surrounding mental health and to help people who believe they have no other choice than to suffer alone. That’s where The Mind Changers come in!
Making a difference with The Mind Changers
The Mind Changers (themindchangers.co.uk) is a website dedicated to providing free information and resources about a variety of mental health issues, including stress, anxiety, phobias and insomnia, for anyone who may need a helping hand. The website was set up by Dr David Lewis, a chartered psychologist and cognitive behaviour therapist and Dan Jones, a hypnotherapist and wellbeing specialist. By combining the expertise they’ve gained from working in their separate fields, they’ve created a fantastic hub of knowledge pertaining to mental health issues.
In many cases, feelings of stress and anxiety are caused as a result of our reactions to situations, as opposed to the situations themselves. Dr David Lewis explains how each of us have the ability to control the way our minds respond when we find ourselves in tricky circumstances. ‘Many of the stresses and anxieties we face in life are less about the things that happen to us but more about how we view them,’ he says. ‘While we can’t always change our circumstances we can always change our mind.’ However, Dr Lewis understands that it’s easier said than done to alter your mindset, which is why he and Dan Jones co-founded The Mind Changers together. ‘We wanted to help make these changes more accessible for everyone. We are a non-for-profit company and we wanted to bring affordable and free resources to enable people to help themselves to a more positive attitude.’
Looking after your mental health
There are many avenues you can go down when you take the first few steps towards improving your mental health, whether you’re dealing with stress, anxiety or any other issue. You can speak to your friends, confide in your family or even make an appointment to meet with a professional for support. However, not everyone has people they can trust or access to professional help.
The Mind Changers gives everyone equal access to the information they need so that they can understand what’s going on in the inner workings of their mind. ‘So many people are suffering with stress-related health problems, but they are either self-conscious or at a loss at where to start to get help,’ says Dan Jones. ‘Although we would actively encourage people to seek professional support, this isn’t always an option. We wanted to stop people suffering behind closed doors and give them the tools to be able to start taking control of their fears and worries.’ The Mind Changers website has heaps of useful advice on anxiety, phobias, wellbeing, memory, dealing with stress during exams, hypnosis and so much more.
