Our top five DIY spa treatments will give results but won’t break the bank. It’s a win-win situation.

With all of the Christmas and New Year’s celebrations finally coming to a close, you probably feel light in the pocket. But it’s still important to dedicate some quality time to yourself every now and then, even if you can’t afford a weekend away in a luxury spa, so before you start a scavenger hunt for any misplaced notes stashed behind the couch, try these budget DIY spa treatments for a lush pamper sesh.

Body exfoliator

A great way to brighten up your skin is to exfoliate. Not only does exfoliating scrub away dead skin cells, but it also unclogs the oil and dirt that lives in your pores and causes breakouts, leaving your skin replenished, radiant and feeling soft. All you’ll need to achieve this is a handful of granulated sugar, honey, coconut oil and a squeeze of lemon. Granulated sugar is a superb substance with natural exfoliation abilities, mix this with the honey and coconut oil for hydration, a little squeeze of lemon and you have a nourishing scrub with powerful antioxidant properties. However, just like any other exfoliating treatment, it only should be used two to three times a week.

Under-eye treatment

No matter how many hours of sleep you get each night, sometimes your eyes can still look tired and puffy the next morning. Puffy eyes can be caused by a variety of things, but unless you are crying your heart out to your favourite romcom you’ll probably want to remedy the inflammation. To begin with, place two teaspoons in the freezer, once they have reached a significantly cold temperature, run them under cold water then place them directly onto your closed eyelids for a few minutes. Next, drop two green tea bags into warm water for a minute, remove from the water and once they have reached room temperature, apply the green tea bags to your eyes for a total of three minutes, which will help compress blood vessels and reduce any signs of swelling thanks to the natural caffeine found in the tea.

Face mask

Keep your complexion radiant throughout the colder months with this avocado and honey face mask. Using half of a very ripe avocado (mashed), two tablespoons of honey and half a teaspoon of coconut oil, mix all of ingredients together until you have a smooth consistency. Apply the mask to your face, avoiding the eyes and lips, kick back for 10 to 15 minutes then rinse it off with warm water. This is a great mask for dry and sensitive skin, so expect your face to feel blissfully smooth this winter as well as hydrated and moisturised.

Hair treatment

Honey, coconut milk, apple cider vinegar and eggs – these raw and natural ingredients are great for achieving shinier, silkier, healthier, hydrated hair. Because of its sugar content, honey helps to retain moisture and prevents hair from falling out, while coconut milk nourishes and improves the strength of the hair making it look fuller and thicker. Leave flaky and itchy scalps to the magical touch of apple cider vinegar, with it’s antibacterial properties expect your hair to become fully cleansed and conditioned, but without stripping it of it’s natural oils. Finally, for the best shine, use eggs as they’re rich in vitamins A, D, and E, proteins and fatty acids.

Just because you won’t be wearing sandals in the next few months doesn’t mean you should ignore the state of your feet. Creating a homemade foot spa is super-easy and an effective way to make sure your tootsies are in pristine condition.
