Should you start eating whole foods?

Should you start eating whole foods? They have been championed among health nuts for years now and for a reason.

We all know how bad processed foods can be for our health. The additives, preservatives and removal of all the goodness make them pretty much pointless to us. Whole foods are simply the anti-processed foods – the foods which have been toyed with as little as possible, allowing them to keep all their benefits in tact. By choosing whole foods over processed foods, you’ll benefit from a higher vitamin and mineral content, and making the switch can be as easy as pie! Okay, maybe that was a bad example…

You can spot refined foods from whole foods easily. Refined foods have been processed to have their husks and fibre removed – so ‘white’ versions of grains like rice and wheat (or bread) are left with no goodness, as they’ve been stripped of their fibre content. This makes them harsher on the body, creating big spikes in blood sugar levels which promote fat storage and energy crashes.

Another way to filter out the refined stuff is by checking the label. If the ingredients list is longer than your phone book, put it back. In fact, you can make sure you’re only getting whole foods by sticking to the one ingredient itself – for example, rather than a fruit bar with a few ingredients added to make it into bar form, why not just eat the fruit itself?
