If you spend lots of time on the road or work away a great deal, it can be hard to keep up your healthy eating habits. There’s nothing more disappointing than working hard to stay fit when you’re at home, only to undo all the good work on a single business trip or weekend away.

Without access to your local health food shop, the gym or your favourite yoga class, you might find yourself reliant on unhealthy restaurant meals and abandoning your regular exercise routine to sit for long hours on planes and trains. Airlines and airport cafes are getting better at offering healthy snack options, but the safest bet, if you know you’re going to be spending some time away from home, is to travel prepared.

Investing in clever little portable snack container solutions makes life an awful lot easier. As does creating some travel-friendly snack foods that are nutrient-dense, non-perishable and filling. It’s the best way to maintain a healthy, clean diet away from home.

Veg sticks and hummus

These are so quick to throw together and make brilliant on-the-go snacks. Make fresh hummus dip so you know there’s no sneaky added sugar or hidden preservatives in there. It’s simple to make with tinned chickpeas, a little olive oil and fresh lemon, but if you’re pushed for time you can sometimes find shop bought brands free from nasties.

Simple banana muffins

The perfect grab-and-go breakfast treat, make the batter using bananas, eggs and baking powder. Unlike coffee house breakfast muffins, these beauties are gluten free and free from refined sugar.

Homemade trail mix

Make your own trail mix. It keeps brilliantly so you can make plenty in advance, store it in a large jar and take a little box or bag full with you whenever you travel. By making it yourself not only does it mean you know exactly what’s gone into the mix, it’s often cheaper and healthier than the added sugar, shop bought versions. Trail mix travels well because it’s lightweight, portable, and full of energy-dense ingredients such as dried fruit, seeds and nuts. We all have our own nutritional and taste-related needs, so these mix ideas come without set ratios or measurements. There are no rules for trail mix, simply combine whatever tastes good.

Mini superfood balls

If you need a quick and simple superfood snack crammed with energy, look no further. Combine ground almonds and honey, then coat in cacao powder and seeds. These are perfect to prepare in advance and keep in the fridge.

Clean cookies

There’s nothing worse than sitting on a plane surrounded by passengers snacking on chocolate and crisps whilst you’re stuck sipping on water. Try baking a stack of clean cookies in advance to ensure you’ve got a tasty yet healthy in-flight snack option.
