This powerful little combo is not for the faint hearted! You might remember the fuss a few years back when Beyoncé talked about a cayenne pepper drink that not only soothed her vocal chords but also helped her lose weight? Well cayenne pepper is pretty strong stuff, and combined with ginger and garlic it not only offers some fantastic anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory health benefits, but also tastes wonderfully hot and spicy.

If you’ve got that sore throat feeling coming on or just want to keep colds and flu at bay, this little beauty is the new year winter tonic for you.

Ingredients (serves 2)

2 x garlic cloves

Half a lemon

Large chunk of ginger

4 x pears

Generous sprinkling of cayenne pepper

1tsp manuka honey

Method

Juice the garlic, lemon, ginger and pears. Pour the juice into a saucepan and gently warm over a low heat.

Stir in a generous sprinkling of cayenne pepper and teaspoon of manuka honey.

Once warm – but not boiling – pour into two mugs and enjoy the kick.
