SUGAR DETOX
The sell
We are all addicted to sugar and sugar is not only fattening, it ages us and is a major cause of disease. The only way to break this ‘addiction’ is to go ‘cold turkey’ and cut out not just what we know of as sugar – sweets, biscuits etc – but foods that break down into sugar in the body, including fruits, bread, pasta, rice etc.
How it works:
The sugar detox is a three-day plan with no calorie counting. There is no swapping between more restricted and less restricted days. Every day is a low-carb day. For example, you might have scrambled eggs for breakfast, a salad for lunch and a stir-fry (no rice) for dinner.
Pros:
- Sound nutritional basis and good variety of foods.
- Should deliver good initial weight loss because grain foods (bread, pasta, rice etc) are removed and this will make the body lose water.
- Good for stabilising blood sugar and mood because of protein and healthy fats content.
Cons:
- Tough to begin with as this really is carb cold turkey, so sugar cravings may be pretty extreme.
- Difficult to sustain in the long term
