5. Swap salad dressings for balsamic vinegar

We Heart Living - 5 ways to upgrade your fridge

Creamy salad dressings with long ingredient lists have mega-high calorie and fat counts so it’s best to toss your ranch or thousand island dressings out for good. Instead, top your salads with better-for-you balsamic vinegar, lemon juice and/or olive oil.

Balsamic vinegar does not only contain fewer calories than most salad dressings, but it also contains acetic acid which helps your body absorb minerals from other foods – packing a punchy flavour without actually adding any fat.

Top tip: ‘With balsamic vinegar, a little goes a long way. Use one tablespoon or less when adding balsamic vinegar to salad dressings, sauces or even soups. A one tablespoon serving of balsamic vinegar has only 14 calories.’
