3. Swap refined carbs for wholegrain versions

We Heart Living - 5 ways to upgrade your fridge

You may well have already heard that we should be eating more rich fibre foods such as wholewheat pasta and wholegrain bread – 18g recommended per day! This is because fibre is important for digestive health and great if you’re looking to lose weight because it can help us to feel full. White bread and white rice don’t have as much of it as the brown stuff so it’s a good idea to make the swap. ‘This will help to keep blood sugar levels stable so you stay full and more energised,’ tells Louise.

‘Whole grains are also naturally higher in nutrients, and richer in fibre, and population studies have shown that people who eat more wholegrains suffer less from cardiovascular disease,’ tells registered nutritionist Carina Norris.

Top tip: ‘If you’re looking to cut your carb intake and increase your vegetable intake, swap pasta for courgette or carrot ribbons and if you’re watching your weight, ditch high-sugar fruits like mangoes and overripe bananas for antioxidant-packed berries, and fibre-rich apples and pears,’ tells Louise.
