Whether you’ve been neglecting your water intake or it’s your hormones that are to to blame, one thing’s for sure: headaches are no fun. And if you’re worried about popping too many painkillers in a bid to get rid of that pesky pain, we’re here to help.

Susanne Haar, pharmacist at Nelsons Homeopathic Pharmacy talks us through the causes, prevention methods and natural solutions to dealing with headaches.

 

What are the most common reasons we get headaches?
‘There are many reasons we get headaches,’ says Susanne. ‘The most common ones are dehydration, stress, hormones, diet, lack of sleep, poor posture and injuries, strong smells, colds, grinding teeth and a low levels of oxygen.’ Hmm yup we’ve definitely suffered with a few of these!

What’s the easiest way to eliminate them once they have started?

‘Drinking plenty of water is one of the best ways to help eliminate a headache,’ says Susanne.’ It’s also worth taking a break from what you’re doing; try going for a walk or getting some fresh air. Taking up and regularly doing an activity such as yoga will help to give your mind and body time to relax, too.’ What better excuse to get yourself to that workout?

 

So how can you shift that pain?
Depending on what the cause is Susanne suggests:

 

  1. Drinking plenty of water daily.
  2. Regular yoga exercises to prevent the build-up of stress.
  3. Trying herbs and homeopathic remedies for hormonal headaches.
  4. Looking at your diet and finding out which foods could be causing headaches, then eliminating or substituting with other products.
  5. Getting at least eight hours of sleep a night.
  6. Using natural cleaning products and perfumes.
  7. Taking supplements to help build up your immune system.
  8. Getting a regular dose of fresh hair throughout the day.
