Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Read our 10 ways to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October.
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK, with over 50,000 women diagnosed each year, according to Breast Cancer Now. This October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and you can make a difference with our 10 ways to support the cause.
Wear it Pink
This year sees the 25th anniversary of the pink ribbon, a national symbol for breast cancer support. Whether you want to kit yourself out in your favourite colour, or simply wear one piece of pink, 20 October is the perfect day to do it. The event is a symbol of unity and has raised almost £30 million so far. Show your support this Breast Cancer Awareness month and contribute to the pink takeover!
Run for change
Signed up to the Royal Parks Half Marathon on Sunday 8 October? Why not make this a healthy decision for you and others, by running the half with Breast Cancer Now. All it requires is a £350 minimum sponsorship pledge. Plus, not only will you gain access to their training zone and a fundraising pack, you will also receive a running vest to show the world that you are contributing towards a great cause.
Be proactive
You don’t have to be a keen runner to help out this Breast Cancer Awareness month – there are different ways you can pound the pavements. Order Breast Cancer Now leaflets online and place them around town to educate people about breast cancer. Whether it’s at the gym or your local coffee hangout, spread the word so others can help.
Get political
Be a part of something bigger and find out if your local MP is a Breast Cancer Now Ambassador. So far there are 190 MPs who are a part of this initiative, but you can raise these numbers by writing to your MP to help breast cancer patients be heard both locally and nationally.
Hold a BIG PINK event
Do something closer to home and simply hold a get together with your friends or colleagues. Simply gather everyone at your house, local cafe or community space – with a pink decor or fancy dress theme, of course – and ask everyone to make a donation for attending. It’s a great way to raise vital funds for a breast cancer charity this Breast Cancer Awareness month.
Go to The Show
If you’re up in Glasgow, head over to The Show, which is taking place at the Hilton on Thursday 26 October. Whether you’re a fashion fanatic or simply want a social night out with the girls, watch 23 women diagnosed with breast cancer strut their stuff on the catwalk. The event features an afternoon show with a three-course lunch for £65 and an evening show with a four-course dinner for £100, with proceeds going to help breast cancer charities.
Bake for charity
It may sound simple, but holding a bake-sale is an easy and fun way to raise money for charity. If you love showing off your baking skills at work, now is the time to excel. Simply round up some equally keen colleagues, add some pink frosting and decorations to your favourite bakes and send the money to a breast cancer charity. It’s a fun and easy way to support Breast Cancer Awareness month!
Travel the world
A five-day hike along the Great Wall of China is the perfect way to satiate wanderlust while changing people’s lives for the better. Start in Beijing and trek the length of the wall to support Breast Cancer Awareness month! The challenge is suitable for all ages and abilities, with entry at £375 with a minimum £2975 sponsorship.
Be a daredevil
Push yourself to your limits and take part in the Big Pink Jump on Saturday 14 October to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Raise money for breast cancer by jumping 10,000 feet and reaching over 120mph! With 20 locations across the UK there’s no better time to face your fears!
Spread some TLC
Don’t want to jump out of a plane? Don’t despair, you can help the cause simply by being social this October. Spread the touching, looking and checking knowledge on Twitter and Facebook this October, and educate people on how to be aware of the signs of breast cancer.
