If you’re feeling anxious, here are our top 3 ways to let go of worries for good.
Most things in life are out of our control. We like to think we’re in control, and we even go to great lengths and efforts to make that our reality, but somewhere along the line things aren’t going to go our way. In that moment we have a choice to make: we can feel disappointment, sadness, confusion, anger – emotions that aren’t always easy to sit with – or we can try to ‘hold on’ to the way things ‘should’ or ‘could’ be. If worrying means you suffer twice, then the art of letting go is something we all need to practise so that we can continue to grow and adapt to the ebbs and flows of life. Here are three steps you can take to help you on the way…
1 Get perspective
Literally go high. Visit a high building, climb a hill, take a flight. There is something about being high up that always helps me realise that I am a small piece of a much bigger picture. With that perspective, the ability to soften around the things I don’t have control over seems to follow.
2 Inhabit your body
What activity do you lose yourself in? Playing the piano, drawing, practising yoga? Whatever it is, do that. When we are ‘in flow’ we are fully occupied by the here and now. In fact it’s impossible to be anywhere else. This space can silence our thinking mind and give the body a chance for some respite. In these moments we let go. Our mind lets go of thought and control and our bodies let go of tension.
3 Write it down
Finding a way to express ourselves is vital for our mental and physical wellbeing. For me, writing is one of the best ways to air my thoughts and create space. The act of writing can be a powerful way to let go of emotions and feelings that don’t serve us. But sometimes the act of writing isn’t enough. That’s where creating a ritual comes in… whether you throw your writing into a fire, send it to someone or simply rip it up, do something with it that signifies it’s finished. This is about taking action that demonstrates you are ready to make space for a lighter version of yourself.
