Lets find out how to boost your sex life with exercise! Apart from the obvious benefits of exercise, such as helping you become fitter, working out can also vamp up your sex life. Certain exercises, such as swimming or pelvic floor workouts, can help you tone specific parts of your body that’ll also have positive effects on your bedroom escapades. Samantha Evans, sexual health and wellbeing expert and co-owner of online sex toy retailer jodivine.com shares her advice.
boost your sex life with exercise
1.Pelvic floor muscle strength
The strength of your pelvic floor muscles can have a huge impact on how much you enjoy sex. Various factors may contribute towards weakened pelvic floor muscles, such as age, childbirth or lack of exercise. ‘Regular swimming, aerobic exercise and stretches can improve muscle tone and strength in the pelvic area, increasing the range of positions you can use during sex, boosting your stamina and enabling longer periods of sexual activity,’ Samantha explains. ‘The best swimming stroke for your pelvic floor is the breaststroke, as the simple action of bringing your legs together causes your thigh and pelvic floor muscles to contract, thus strengthening them.’
2.Endorphins
Don’t you love it when you’ve just finished a workout and you feel absolutely amazing? Well, feeling great post-exercise can also have a beneficial effect on your sex life. ‘All forms of exercise boost your endorphins (the feel good hormones), which can increase your libido by reducing your stress levels – a major contributory factor in low libido,’ says Samantha. Sex isn’t just about being physical, but also about your state of mind. If exercise gives you a positive mindset, then this will carry across to other aspects of your life, including during sex.
3.Better circulation
There’s a lot going on inside your body during exercise. You breathe faster and heavier, your brain cells function at a higher level, making you feel more alert and awake, and your adrenaline soars. However, that’s not all. Samantha reveals: ‘it can also improve your circulation, increasing blood flow around the body and especially to the genital area, boosting sexual function.’ When you exercise, your heart rate increases so it can supply more oxygenated blood to your muscles. An increase in blood flow to the lower regions of your body can make sex more pleasurable for men and women.
4.Confidence
Focussing on yourself and figuring out what will make you feel more confident is a fantastic way to boost your self-esteem. Exercising can transform the way you look and the way you feel for the better. ‘Exercise in general has both physical and psychological benefits to health by helping you lose weight and tone your body, which, in turn, increases your body confidence, making you feel and look more attractive,’ says Samantha. The only person’s opinion on your appearance that you should care about is your own. However, if exercise gives you the confidence to take things up a notch in the bedroom with your partner, then that’s a brilliant bonus.
5.Age is no barrier better sex through exercise
You may think your sex life will dwindle with age, but it doesn’t have to. ‘A Harvard University study of 160 male and female swimmers in their 40s and 60s found a positive relationship between physical exercise and sexual intercourse,’ says Samantha. ‘The swimmers in their 60s reported having sex lives similar to that of people aged 40+ in the general population.’ Higher levels of fitness are directly correlated with higher levels of sexual satisfaction, no matter how old you are. Age is just a number, after all. Exercise your way to a happier and healthier sex life!
