Created by Macmillan Cancer Support, Go Sober for October encourages people to go-booze free for 31 days during October. The aim of is to raise awareness and funds for the vital work that Macmillan does towards helping cancer patients. Just think about how much an average night out costs you? It’s usually a bank-busting affair! Well imagine all the money you would save by not drinking for a whole month. And how much of that money you could donate to a worthy cause like Macmillan. If you complete the challenge you’ll become a ‘Soberhero’ – with increased energy, better health, clearer skin and stronger willpower. Along with all these super sober powers you’ll be helping change the lives of people with cancer. We’ve come up with five clever ways to keep yourself busy during your sober month, and they’re so enjoyable you might even carry it on.
Learn something new
Starting a new hobby or experiencing something you’ve never done before is a great way to stay occupied during your dry month. Have you always wanted to do that art course or learn how to sail? Well with all the spare money you will have, and hangover-free days, this is the perfect time to do it! Not only will it keep you busy, but you’ll also learn a new skill and meet some interesting people along the way. It’s great to tell people you have a hobby when they ask what you do for fun, rather than just saying you go out for drinks every weekend. It will also look great on your CV!
Get fitter
Not drinking for an entire month is bound to make you a healthier person. So why not go one step further and improve your fitness levels too? You will notice an increase in your energy levels when not drinking, and extra motivation to get out of bed in the morning. Plus, not having a hangover means you now have no excuse to skip the gym. There are loads of great classes out there that are so much fun you’ll feel like you’re in a nightclub! It’s the perfect way to spend a weekend and not feel guilty about it on Monday morning.
Enjoy some culture
If avoiding nights out on the town is the only way you can get through Sober October then you will need to fill your evenings somehow. So why not enjoy some of the amazing culture the UK has to offer? No matter where you live, you’re bound to find something cultural to do. Take a trip to the theatre or visit an art gallery. Lots of museums hold special events every Friday night at the end of each month that include things like live bands and comedy gigs. Get involved!
Become a foodie
Most social occasions revolve around food and drink, so you can still see your friends by going out for nice dinners. Take advantage of the money you’ll save by heading to upmarket restaurants, or treat yourself to some beautiful food to cook at home and throw a dinner party. Also, now you’re not consuming a load of extra calories from alcohol it’s an ideal excuse to eat more food!
Meet new people
Why not get out there and make some new friends? Meeting new people is a great way to be introduced to things you wouldn’t normally try. They will encourage you to do different things that don’t focus around alcohol. Plus, you’re a much better judge of character when not intoxicated so you might even meet a nice guy, too!
