If you’re thinking about going paleo, you’re not alone. Loads of us have been inspired by our caveman ancestors to ditch grains and load up on good fats and protein to get lean, boost energy and slow down ageing. If you think you’re ready to take on this way of eating, here are our top 5 tips on how to go paleo.

1. Take your time
Although some people dive right in and find success, you’re much less likely to cave by easing yourself into it slowly. Slowly cut carbs out a meal at a time, and make sure you’re keeping your calorific intake the same by replacing the carb calories with other foods like vegetables.

2. Don’t be afraid of fat
One of the biggest mistakes Paleo newbies make is cutting fat out as well as carbs. Fats occurring in foods like meat, nuts and avocados are not only permitted but encouraged – the idea is to get your body using fat as fuel rather than carbs.

3. Drink water
Always keep yourself hydrated to keep your brain alert and bodily systems in top notch. The initial switchover to Paleo eating might give you headaches while your body transitions – dehydration will perpetuate this.

4. Exercise smart
Paleo eating suits a paleo lifestyle. If you do lots of slow and steady-paced cardio like marathon running, Paleo might not suit you. Back in the day when people ate this way, their energy expenditure came in the form of walking and short, sharp bursts of energy as well as lifting and moving heavy objects.

5. Prepare
Don’t let yourself get caught off-guard. If you’re eating out, check out the restaurant’s menu beforehand to find out what you can eat, and cook your lunch meals in advance to take with you to work.
