Spring has sprung and it’s the perfect time to have a good old clean. But we’re not just talking about clearing out the junk in your house! Spring is a great time to detox your body and get rid of the nasties, to leave you feeling renewed and rejuvenated. So we’ve teamed up with nutritionist from NutriCentre, Ella Allred, to share 4 easy ways to detox this spring.
Clean up your toxic load
Toxins accumulate from a wide range of sources, such as foods and drinks, as well as their containers. Switch to organic foods, drink purified water, use chemical-free cookware and containers, and change your cosmetics to natural ones. You will need to ensure a good level of fibre is being ingested to help carry toxins out of the body.
Nourish your gut
It is really important to maintain a healthy gut, as it is the basis of overall health. Vegetables are very important when detoxing, as they provide vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and plenty of fibre. Amino acids from protein are also essential – especially glutamines. Foods that contain glutamine are bone broths, meat and spinach. Vitamin A is also needed for gut health, so eat fish like salmon, as well as carrots and leafy greens for this.
Exercise and drink water
Sweat-inducing exercise for a minimum of 30 minutes three times a week helps to increase blood flow to your liver. Maintaining good blood flow is particularly important for detoxification. The sweating is also a way in which your body can excrete toxins. Drinking a minimum of two litres of water (purified if possible) each day, also helps the body to flush out what it doesn’t need. A lot of our toxins are stored in fat cells, which is why many people who do not have a clean lifestyle struggle to lose weight.
Eat plenty of fruit and veg
This means eating around seven portions of vegetables and two fruits each day. The fibre will help to sweep toxins out of your bowel and prevent them being reabsorbed. The nutrients contained in the vegetables will also aid the body with detoxification.
