Small improvements to your home don’t need huge amounts of effort or investment, but can make a real difference to how a space looks and feels, especially if things are looking a little tired. Whether you want to make a statement with some artwork, or just add some texture and colour to a room, these 5 ways to overhaul your home are guaranteed to create something striking and luxurious.

De-clutter

Clutter can build up over time without you even recognising it, so choose a weekend and start to rethink what you have.

The process of reassessing your homeware is one of mindfulness, as you need to consider how each item is used and whether you really need it. The best part is that it’s absolutely free! When you clear out a few pieces there will be space to move others around to make the room look completely different. You may even want to consider following the rules of Feng Shui.

Anything you don’t want can be dropped off at a charity shop or sold on Gumtree, or eBay. This little bit of extra money could help fund any further decorating.

Throws and cushions

Beautiful cushions on the sofa can definitely add a little something extra to a sitting room. So can a soft blanket casually thrown over an armrest – it adds a bit of luxury to your most comfortable space. The White Company sells some beautiful pieces, such as this neutral grey Bourne Collection set. The throw is £120 and cushion covers are from £40.

While you’re at it, why not treat yourself to some new, crisp white bed sheets? Check out the beautiful Avignon Bed Linen Collection, priced from £55.

Pots and plants

Having some greenery in the house can make any room feel immediately lush and fresh. Bringing the outside in is a great way to help you feel connected to nature, especially if you live in a busy city. The kitchen is a great place to start with a plant. Try something like a fern, which is relatively low maintenance.

One of the best bits about having houseplants is choosing the pots! There are so many great designs out there, some intricate and others beautifully rustic. Choose ones that best suit your house style and you can even get a few extras to use as ‘tidy pots’ around the house: to stash things in.

These three antique blue metal planters, £84.99, from Not On The High Street are the perfect rustic pots to hold plants or anything else you can find.

Artwork

These days you can get some great artwork prints or photography at relatively cheap prices, and art can add a much-needed pop of colour to your walls, dramatically changing how a room feels. Art.co.uk has some excellent print choices, such as this Gimick photographic print, priced from £34.99. The soft lines and bold colours will turn any walls into a masterpiece.

Candles

Scented candles may seem like a luxury but they last a long time and can provide a sweet aroma for any occasion. SpaceNK have some exquisite candles, including a range from Malin + Goetz. The Otto and Vetiver candles, £37 each, are beautiful when burned on their own but also complement each other when burned together to create an intoxicating garden aroma.

Church candles on exquisite candlesticks can make beautiful displays around the fireplace or even in the bathroom ready for when you need a relaxing bath. These glossy purple candlesticks, £95, from Not On The High Street tick all the boxes and look beautiful with a tall church candle placed on top.art
