It’s a good idea to create your own homemade trial mix, as shop-bought versions often come with sneaky hidden sugars and ingredients such as peanuts, which may cause allergy problems for some. By combining your own nuts, seeds and fruit you will know exactly what’s gone into your trail mix and chances are it will cost a whole lot less than pre-mixed versions.

We all have our own nutritional and taste-related requirements, so the trail mix ingredients ideas listed below come without set ratios or measurements. There are no rules. Just combine whatever tastes good!

Nuts

Opt for unsalted, unsweetened nuts such as almonds, walnuts, macadamia nuts, pistachios, cashews, hazelnuts, brazil nuts, pecans or pine nuts.

Seeds

Sprinkle a handful of pumpkin, sunflower, sesame, flax, or hemp seeds in to your trail mix for an extra boost of nutrients.

Dried fruit

Dried fruit is a great source of fibre, antioxidants, calcium and vitamins A, C, and K. Look for dried fruit options without added sugar and preservatives. Fruit such as apples, cherries, cranberries, goji berries, blueberries, strawberries, apricots, raisins, banana chips, figs or dates.

Extras

Add little extras such as dark chocolate chips or coconut flakes. And season the mix with sea salt or spices such as ground ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom and Chinese five spice.
