Fitbit releases the Activity Index

As we’re beginning to lack motivation to work out, Fitbit releases the Activity Index, which may help kick you into gear.
The Activity Index shows the most popular workouts and fitness activities among key demographics. So what does this mean for you? Well, it’s interesting to see the data, for a start. When using the index you can check out the research to discover which activities are the most popular by age group and location. Fitbit, the market leader in connected health and fitness technology, hopes that this new information will help provide a clear picture of emerging fitness trends and act as a motivational tool to get people joining in with these activities.
National preferences
The data is based on the logged activities of over one million people, analysed by gender, age and location. It is possible to see which activities are the most popular around the globe, with comparisons between countries. This allows users to see which events are more popular with men or women and which age groups are more likely to take part in various activities. For example, overall in the UK, running comes out top, with biking behind it and swimming taking bronze.
The research was conducted across the US, Australia, the UK and Canada. One reason why some activities may be more popular in certain countries could be down to the different types of weather. For example, as British weather tends to be pretty chilly at times, it could explain why activities like aerobics and indoor cycling are more popular here than in Australia.
Age groups
Fitbit has divided the age groups of the participants into three categories: Millennials (18-35), Generation X-ers (35-55) and Baby Boomers (55 and up). By discovering what sort of activities are popular among certain age groups, it makes it much easier for someone to see which sort of exercise is more likely to suit them.
What’s hot
This research is also useful for spotting current and future fitness trends. Fitbit have named PiYo (Pilates mixed with yoga), Barre (a combination of ballet, Pilates and yoga moves) and Body Pump (weights-based group workout) as being the fitness trends du jour.
