Balance, balance, balance; whether it’s about your food choice, staying fit or your general lifestyle, it’s the word on everyone’s lips. So we decided to sit down for a Q&A with Honestly Healthy’s Natasha Corrett – the queen of balance and all things alkaline – to find out her top tips for staying healthy the balanced way!
Q. What three ingredients do you always have in your fridge and why?
Spinach – because it can be added to so many meals, from smoothies to salads and even pancakes!
Almond milk – I love having milky rooibos tea with almond milk and protein powder in the morning. Milk is nearly always used in baking and everyone knows that I love to bake!
Tahini – because it is the best base for a delicious creamy dressing and great for an extra protein kick with some fruit or crackers in the afternoon or add to smoothies.
Q. What ingredients do you avoid, pre-summer, and why?
I feel that you shouldn’t just get ready for the summer, it should be a year-round goal to stay healthy and active. However, it can be good to avoid sugar, wheat and meat, which are all acid forming, as they make the body have to work over time to get back to its natural alkaline state.
I feel that you shouldn’t just get ready for the summer, it should be a year-round goal to stay healthy and active.
Q. What three on-the-go snacks do you always make and why?
Nut butter on toast is a great pick me up. I also really enjoy houmous with cucumber and homemade granola bars. They all provide slow-releasing energy and have protein in, which gives you sustained energy throughout the day.
Q. What exercise do you do to prepare your body for summer?
Like with my diet, I try to stay healthy all year round, so I don’t just exercise for summer. I usually do two long runs a week, as well as strength and HIIT training and Pilates.
Q. What is your favourite summer drink to make?
I love putting herbs and fresh fruit into a jug of filtered water and leaving to infuse, as the flavours are delicious and it’s super refreshing.
Q. How do you stay hydrated whilst on-the-go?
I use my BRITA Fill&Go bottle as it’s so easy to slip into my bag and it reminds me to drink water wherever I am.
Q. Why is staying hydrated especially important in summer?
As the weather gets warmer, our bodies need more water to function. I find that if I feel tired I will drink more water and have much more energy. Often when you’re hungry or tired it’s because you’re dehydrated.
Q. What is your one top tip for people who want to stay healthy in summer?
Drink plenty of water as it helps you to feel less bloated and you’ll feel more alert and focused.
Q. Do you change your diet during summer, if so why?
No I don’t, I try to stay consistent throughout the year so that I always feel happy and healthy.
