Summer is here! With Wimbledon is full swing, and the Pimm’s starting to flow you’d be mad not to top it all off with some juicy strawberries! We heart strawberries and with an amazing 7,500 tonnes of them eaten during the Wimbledon fortnight alone, we know you do too!
And these beautiful red berries aren’t just a delicious treat, they’re packed with fantastic health benefits, too. Check out Seasonal Berries’ eight reasons to indulge this season.
1. They are happy berries!
A recent study by the University of London revealed that strawberries are the fruit that makes us the happiest. 86% of people felt relaxed just by thinking about the brilliant berry!
2. Strawberries shout summer
The research also found strawberries are strongly associated with summer – 77% said a strawberry’s aroma triggered summer memories, while 64% said it prompted thoughts of sunshine.
3. They’re packed with vitamin C
Just seven strawberries contain an adult’s entire RDA of Vitamin C – and they have even more of the powerhouse vitamin than oranges!
4. They’ll make your teeth sparkle
Starting to see the effects of your daily morning cappuccino? Strawberries contain malic acid, an enzyme that actually cleans stains off teeth – and mashed strawberries can be mixed with baking soda to create a natural whitening product.
5. They are high in fibre
Naturally high in fibre and low in sugar, strawberries can reduce your overall sugar intake.
6. They boast ellagic acid
Strawberries are full of this powerful acid, which is proven to help fight cancers. It also protects the elastic fibre in our skin which reduces sagging. Anti-ageing prevention without the hassle!
7. They also contain potassium, vitamin K and magnesium
This trio of nutrients are important for bone health.
8. And flavonoids!
Flavonoids are the plant pigments that are responsible for strawberries’ bright red skin, and can lower the risk of heart disease by reducing cholesterol. The skin also contains anthocyanins, which can boost short-term memory by 100% if eaten over the course of eight weeks.
