The best night out

All the fun and excitement of going out while doing something to nurture and strengthen your body as well as your mind

We’ve found it! Yes, the best night out, ever. You might just be surprised how it stacks up! Our new columist Lisa Fineberg has found the best night out, but it’s not what you’d traditionally expect!

So let’s face it, there is nothing better than that first glass of wine on a Friday night after a ball-breaking, or even worse, mind-numbing week at work. It tastes like diamonds melting in your mouth, and so well deserved right? Then three hours and four wines later you feel a little tired and tipsy but you didn’t bust your guts all week to go to bed now, the night must go on. So it’s time for an espresso martini and why not wash that down with a shot of vodka or two, or six.

Next thing you know you wake up with a little ouchie in your brain and turn over to play the fun game of ‘Guess Who’, sleeping next to you. Sometimes you’re lucky enough to think ‘what a hottie’, still can’t remember his name though. An hour later you’re on the train, carrying your broken high heels in one hand asking yourself where’s my bra…? On the way home you stop for a veggie burger. Yeah vegetables will make me feel good, the sugary bun and oily, salty wedges don’t count surely, not mixed in with the goodness of those processed veggies (and butter and mayo…). Sure, you had a fun night, can’t remember it, must have been fun though. But somehow it’s 4pm the day is gone and you feel just a little wrongtown inside.

Look, I’m not saying that’s not great. Those big wild nights can be all kinds of awesome, and hey the wrong feeling does go away eventually… But what if there was a way to have all the fun and excitement of going out while doing something to nurture and strengthen your body as well as your mind at the same time? Well, drum roll please, I think I have found the solution. ‘Disco Yoga!’

Ok, hear me out before you think this is some kind of crazy hippy acid party just waiting to happen. It’s not. So picture this: 100 healthy, enthusiastic, open-minded, friendly peeps crammed into a yoga studio on a Friday night.  All dressed in jungle outfits, (the theme of the night which changes on a weekly basis) and all rather attractive. Of course they are, they’re fit, well toned yogis. What takes place? 90 minutes of fun, free-flowing, adrenaline pumping yoga, to some of the best disco music you can remember from the glorious 70s and 80s, back when you were probably too young to know what vodka tasted like, or maybe not even yet born if you’re one of those totes cool gen Y’ers. Add to that another 30 minutes of random dancing, the room buzzing, energy flowing, sweat dripping, faces lit up with joy and laughter beaming across the walls of the studio and the best bit… Wait for it… Not a drop of booze in sight. The only liquids available throughout the evening are water and those green, make you wanna puke but also feel really good about yourself, smoothies. Yummo!

I know! Can you believe it? One-hundred people having the time of their lives and all completely sober! The night’s over by about 11pm, but you don’t feel cheated that it’s finished too soon. You’re exhausted but totally fulfilled and in bed before the clock strikes and you turn into a pumpkin (and misplace your overpriced Victoria Secrets knickers).

You wake up the next morning feeling, refreshed, full of beans, happy and cleansed inside. You look inside your purse and see all the money you took out at the ATM yesterday still intact, and wait what’s that other bit of paper? An ATM receipt? No, that’s right, it’s the phone number of the super hot, intelligent, and charming yogi you met last night who was dressed as Tarzan.
Hmm… I think I’d call that Friday night a bit of a win.

Lisa went to Disco Yoga at home in her native Oz, but those in the UK can head to Funk The Budha for an equally epic session. Or kick-start your day with Morning Glory’s Morning Raves, which the WHL team are massive fans of!
