Could you go sober for 31 days? Alcohol Concern’s latest campaign is challenging you to reboot your health doing just that. Launching originally in 2012, Dry January is the official annual event where thousands abstain from alcohol while fundraising for charity. A great way to reflect on habits, spread awareness of alcoholism and invest in a good cause. With better sleep, weight loss and savings of almost £200 a month, more than two million people attempted the challenge last year. Since mulled wine and social festivities are out of the way for another few months, why not try Alcohol Concern’s tips for staying sober throughout January.

Buddy up

Drinking alcohol is embedded into our culture, with those who choose not to participate often being stigmatised. Having a friend or relative who understands the challenge your face can be a source of support as well as give you the added accountability needed to succeed.

Record the benefits you feel

Clearer skin, less aching and a better night’s sleep are all benefits that come with cutting alcohol from your diet. Keeping a record of weight loss and changes in your energy can be the most motivational tool for keeping away from alcohol one day at a time.

Fundraise

With more than 50,000 people taking part in Alcohol Concern’s Dry January campaign, there is a fundraising event suited to every talent and ability. A great opportunity to meet people who are also attempting the challenge, and be motivated by giving the money you would’ve spent on alcohol to a good cause instead.

Stock up on your favourite teas

Bars and pubs aren’t the only sociable locations to spend time with friends, this January try frequenting your local cafe more. As an alternative drink to help you relax after a long day, turn to your favourite tea or coffee for a blissful indulgence especially during these chilly days.

Try a new hobby

Even if you don’t drink often, cutting out alcohol completely can be surprisingly beneficial in helping you to think more clearly. Channel your clearer mindset into a new hobby such as travelling, photography or yoga for a sense of accomplishment and to develop new skills.

Swap pub night for a movie or meal night

No one wants to give up their escape from the stresses of everyday life. Maintain a social side by switching up your usual pub plans for a night at the movies or at the latest pop-up restaurant.

Download the motivational app

Featuring motivational daily quotes alongside an accurate progress chart, the Dry January App personalises your journey. With features and recipes to remind you that you’re not on your own, the free app reminds you of the money your saving and alternative ways to spend your time.

Get your workplace involved

Competing to see who can abstain from alcohol the longest can infuse fun into your dry period as well as provide steady support.

Try some mocktail recipes

You would be surprised how delicious mocktails can be. With many indistinctly different to their alcohol counterparts, experimenting with tasty recipes will make you forget all about alcoholic cocktails.

Get active

Dust of your gym membership and destress with some exercise that will further your weight loss and health results at the end of your alcohol-free period.
