The new season is a fantastic excuse to ditch the clutter, cut out waste and save some money at the same time, so we’ve put together our top 5 ways to spring clean your life right now – what are you waiting for? Meet your new best friend, Minimalism…

1. Get some perspective

We’re all guilty of a bit of harmless hoarding; you might wear those jelly sandals again, right? And who knows when you might next need that glitter eyeliner. But ask yourself if it would affect the quality of your life if you don’t have it anymore? This doesn’t mean getting rid of anything that you don’t use daily, but it does mean getting a little perspective. It’s easy to confuse wants and needs, but by removing obvious things from your home that don’t add value to your life, you’ll be surprised at how much better you feel.

2. Recycle and upcycle

Fill up a bag or two of unwanted items and do your bit by donating to your local charity shop, hospital or nursery. And what about re-gifting? It might seem cheeky to re-gift that picture frame your beloved granny gave you (still in its box), but alongside being purse-friendly, it’s a great way to get use out of something that would otherwise be collecting dust at the back of your cupboard.

Love the vintage look? Upcycling is a creative, cheap and environmentally friendly way to improve what you already have. There are some fab free online tutorials that can help you breathe some shabby-chic life into old items.

3. Set easy rules

Use the one in, one out method. As soon as you get something new, get rid of something you already have, especially if it’s a replacement. Not used something in ages? Chuck it into a bin bag and stash it somewhere. If you haven’t gone back to it in two months, ditch it!

By creating routines like this, you develop habits that make it much easier to let go of things on a regular basis (or stop collecting them in the first place).

4. Make some dollar

Car boot sales are back – and they’re a fun way to offload some clutter and make a bit of money along the way. Check out what’s on in your local area and get involved. A set date is a great incentive to sift through your haul. And make a day of it – coax a friend along to help with coffee and cake runs!

No time? No worry. There are lots of great resources like eBay, Depop and Shpock, which make it easy to advertise and sell your unwanted items hassle-free online in minutes – download the apps for free now.

5. Be mindful

We live in a society where we’re constantly under pressure to have the latest cutting-edge technology and the trendiest fashion. It’s hard not to fall into the false mindset that to feel happy and successful, you need newer, bigger and better all the time.

Don’t buy stuff you don’t need and put that money to good use, whether that be a manicure, brunch with friends or a relaxing weekend break. A great experience will always trump a new designer bag – fact.
