 Söll, Austria

Best for budget: Söll, Austria

Ski holidays are notoriously expensive, but don’t lose hope – there are plenty of deals to be had. Shadowed by its glitzy neighbour Kitzbühel, Söll in the Austrian Tirol, for example, embodies the typical Austrian Alpine experience for a significantly lower price. With 250km of satisfying pistes, one of the best lift systems and over 70 mountain restaurants, it’s not a downgrade, either. In fact, local slopes are north-facing, so they keep their snow relatively well and the resort has more recently invested in great artificial help to combat its low height. You may know Söll for its raucous nightlife, but the resort has come a long way from its lager-lout days. Sure, its nightlife is certainly still lively and those looking for a buzzing aprés scene will indeed find it, but it’s somewhat more upmarket now than its younger days. Dotted among pricier hotels and chalets, you’ll find cheap accommodation for as little as £23 a night at the Apartments Sport Mayr, numerous supermarkets for those who’d rather self-cater, and reasonably-priced ski passes.
