Whether you’re looking for something a little different to your usual session at the gym or fancy challenging yourself to move unlike you’ve ever done before, pole-dancing will definitely tick these boxes. Chances are, it may have crossed your mind to look into it and give it a go but you just weren’t sure. After all, we won’t all be able to swivel and swirl around a pole as elegantly as the pros on social media, surely? But in fact, it really is achievable – even for the most stiff and uncoordinated of us all.

I popped into London’s Pole People (polepeople.co.uk) to get a taste of what a beginner’s session would be like and was surprised to find it a whole lot less scary than I’d imagined! We started out by stretching and shaking our bodies to release any tension and within a few minutes, were warm and giggling our way through simple moves with the pole. This included learning how to walk around it (which sort of resembles a gymnast’s walk on a pommel horse). All in all, the experience was hard work on my muscles, a great a laugh and I felt much more reassured having experienced the first session. So if it’s been sitting on your mind for a while, get yourself booked in you’ll feel much better for it! And if it hasn’t crossed your mind? Here are five reasons why you really should try pole-dancing:

The new spin

Most of us can get bored of routine pretty quickly and our workouts aren’t an exception. If you’re a fan of classes, this is a great new style and format to add to your favourites.

Body-builder

No, not the ripped kind! But you’ll discover muscles that you never knew you had before, and will be strengthening not just your core, but your arms, legs, and maybe some other parts too.

Flexy-fun

It’s similar to ballet in that your toes and fingers are always extended to achieve a lithe yet graceful movement. You’ll also be making use of the pole when stretching and bending, which is great for those who are constantly stiff or tense.

Laugh more

It really is as thrilling and fun as you can imagine. Go with friends and you’ll find yourself struggling to keep a straight face while attempting a corkscrew spin.

Boost your confidence

Being able to strut your stuff and move freely in front of a mirror isn’t a naturally comfortable situation for us all, so learning to do so is great for your confidence. Just let go and have fun!
