Why WHL loves winter

In case you forget why the cold season is so great, here’s why WHL loves winter. It’s a sad fact of life: not very many people look forward to winter in the UK. Unless you’re a Halloween or Christmas fanatic, winter means a drop in temperature, wind and rain and grumpy people. It’s very easy to forget all of the positives of winter, even though there are plenty – so here are some reminders of everything it has to offer…

Seasonal hot drinks
Pumpkin spiced lattes. Caramel hot chocolates. Eggnog lattes. There are so many more options for your morning coffee, and they are so much more fun than the boring summer drinks. Plus, you get the themed takeaway cups, which make you look much cooler than the normal ones. Most importantly, you appreciate every sip of your hot drink so much more when you’re battling your way through the cold, wet streets on a November morning. Winter is the time of hot beverage appreciation.

Halloween
Although it will never be as exciting as it was when you were a kid and ‘trick or treating’ your neighbours was socially acceptable, Halloween is still a fantastic time of the year. When else do you get to try costume make-up, and have a drink dressed as a witch, cat or ghost? Pumpkin carving, snacks made with green food dye and apple bobbing are activities that you can only do at a certain time of the year. Halloween brings out the inner child, and you have to admire the confidence and enthusiasm behind some people’s outfits.

Winter fashion
Firstly, there are new season clothes to covet on the high street. Secondly, you can finally bring out all your cosy jumpers and ankle boots to wear as much as you want. And of course, jumpers hide a multitude of flaws. It’s basic science that you eat more for ‘insulation’ to stay toasty during the winter season. So don’t feel bad about putting on a few pounds, just chuck on a chunky scarf and a jumper and enjoy the warmth.

Duvet days
Gone are the days when you feel bad about cancelling on your friends to meet up because the weather is nice outside, it’s winter now! So it’s now perfectly acceptable to become a complete hermit at the weekend with the company of a mug of hot chocolate and some slipper socks. Netflix becomes your best friend, your duvet becomes your right-hand man, and soup becomes your soul mate. Don’t feel guilty about chucking your social life out of the window for three months, everyone else is doing exactly the same until December’s party season.

Christmas
This is a very obvious one, but it is definitely one of the best things about struggling through the winter. Christmas parties are always the best because everyone is getting so excited, fairy lights are in every shopping centre, and you get to pick out presents for all of the loved ones. And for the day itself, everyone knows that calories never count on Christmas Day and Boxing Day – so you can really let rip with the roast potatoes and Prosecco, without feeling any guilt. No one can argue that Christmas Day isn’t the best day of the year, and it falls slap bang in the middle of winter. Therefore, winter can’t really be that bad can it?
