We Heart Living investigates: is avocado the new beauty hero ingredient?

We know just how great avocado is as a part of healthy and balanced diet. With all those good fats and the scrumptious taste, it’s no wonder we can’t get enough of.

But avocados don’t just work from the inside out. They provide so many amazing benefits for your skin, too – even when applied directly. With both skincare and make-up products using this marvel fruit as a main ingredient, it’s increasingly gaining popularity in the beauty world.

‘Avocado oil is a good source of nutrients and has been found to contain traces of 14 minerals and 11 vitamins including vitamins E, A and D,’ says Ian Taylor, cosmetic scientist at Green People. ‘Like olive oil, avocado oil is rich in oleic acid which is a good skin softening and conditioning ingredient.’

And it doesn’t just stop there – not only does avocado oil hydrate the skin and help to reduce damage from UV rays, it can slow down the ageing process, too. ‘Avocado contains monounsaturated fatty acids that can help reduce wrinkles as well as crow’s feet,’ says Ian. ‘The vitamin E and amino acids in it also boost the production of collagen, which reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.’

As well as all this, it can help improve the appearance of spots and scars caused by acne, eczema and minor burns. The vitamin E and omega 3 in it help repair damaged tissue, therefore improving the appearance of scars. It even accelerates the healing time and prevents new blemishes from forming.

Thankfully avocado oil is suitable for all skin types, which means everyone can reap the benefits of this super ingredient. Keep reading to check out our pick of the best five avocado-infused beauty products.
